It’s Burt Gummer Day and if you know what that is, you’re as weird as Sweetums

Following is a guest blog written by Sweetums about a character in the “Tremors” series of movies.

Everyone that knows me knows how much I like a weird holiday, but I am not always as diligent about celebrating them or reminding you to celebrate them as I should be. I mean we have already missed National Toothache Day (February 9) and National Awkward Moments Day (March 18). You are in luck today though because I am here to inform you about a holiday that is not to be missed – April 14, is Burt Gummer Day. This either fills you with immense joy, or it makes you wonder who is Burt Gummer, why he has a day dedicated to him and why the day April 14. For those who did not fit into the first category, all of your questions will be answered.

Who is Burt Gummer? Burt Gummer is a fictional character from the “Tremors” movie franchise where he is played with gusto by actor Michael Gross. Even though he has his own day, he was not the main character of the first or second Tremors installments, he was a goofy gun-loving side character married to a character played by Reba McEntire. The Burt Gummer character has appeared in all the Tremors films and television show with the exception of “Tremors 4: The Legend Begins,” which was a prequal and featured his ancestor Hiram Gummer who was also played my Michael Gross.

Why does Burt Gummer have a day dedicated to him? Burt is kinda the de-facto star of the franchise, starting with “Tremors 3” (Kevin Bacon left the franchise after the first film). Gross is the only person involved in the franchise to make an appearance in every film and the short-lived television series. Fans thought he deserved to be celebrated and in 2017 Imgur user @BabyFarkMcGeeZax created the day to celebrate the legendary figure.

Why is Burt Gummer Day April 14? There really doesn’t seem an answer for this particular question other than perhaps it is the day before tax day and the character Burt is notoriously anti-government leaning. I do know that at the end of the final film in the series (so far), “Tremors: Shreiker Island,” a message comes across the screen telling everyone to celebrate Burt Gummer Day on April 14 and since the film was released in October of 2020, this will be the first time that everyone knows in advance to celebrate this day, and now you do too.

If you would like to know about Burt Gummer, you can find out all about his fabulousness here.

If you have read this and are wondering the very simplistic question of how did the movie Tremors spawn so many sequels, I encourage you to read up on this fascinating franchise here.
