Sweetums and I moved a few months ago from mid-city Huntsville, Ala. (near Village of Providence) to rural Madison County, about 12 miles out into the country. We have an acre lot and we’re surrounded by farms and we love to drive around and get accustomed to our new surroundings. Recently, we came across a little ghost town about three miles from the house. It’s more of a crossroads, really, but there were several buildings so we were curious as to what this used to be. The buildings were at the intersection of Old Railroad Bed Road and Baites Road.
Old Railroad Bed Road, as the name implies, did once follow a rail line, the Middle Tennessee and Alabama Railway, so it’s likely the little store was just a whistle stop. None of the rail line remains. I did discover mention of a former community known as Dan that had a store but the online history said all the buildings except a house and grist mill were destroyed by a 1913 tornado. So was this little store (likely once a general-store-post-office combination) part of Dan or another community? If you have any info, please email email@example.com.
